Spain and bullfighting go hand in hand. Yet bullfighting was banned within the Spanish province of Catalonia July 28. The bullfighting ban can have to start by year 2010 in Spain. Animal rights activists were joyous when they found out the Catalonian parliament in Barcelona decided to pass the ban. But individuals close to the story said the bullfighting ban wasn’t about animal cruelty. Many think that Catalonians are just trying to be different than the rest of Spain in this political act. Catalonia bullfighting isn’t about animal rights
The Catalonia bullfighting ban appears to be more about politics than animal cruelty. NPR reports that Catalonia has only one bullring and about 15 bullfights a year. Anti-bullfighting activists denounced the longtime Spanish custom as cruel, while supporters insisted ending it will damage Spanish culture. Some Catalonians calling for even greater independence from Spain say the bullfighting ban shows they’re willing to break from Spanish tradition. Barcelona is when all this began while bulls seem unharmed by the activity. Spain has about 1,000 bullfights a year.
Anti-bullfighting drives a wedge between Catalonia and Madrid
Spanish conservatives and fans of bullfighting were upset with the Catalonia bullfighting ban. The Popular Party is expecting there to be an anti-Spanish rebuke within the near future with anything that is going on. Catalonia has always been one to separate from the pack considering their own language they have as well as the culture that is separate from the rest of Spain. It has been seen by everyone all the pressure to outlaw bullfighting as a political statement.
Banning bullfighting just to rebel
Damian Corrigan, Spanish travel blogger, the Catalonia bullfighting ban had nothing to do with bulls that die within the sport. Writing for About.com, Corrigan said Catalonia’s self-indulgent struggle for independence is illogical and irrelevant in today’s Europe. Really, all that Catalonians want are less taxes going to Madrid. Coherent political stances are optional and rebellion exists simply for the sake of rebellion.
