Catcher within the deranged mind’s eye
One of the disturbing things about Mark David Chapman is his obsession with “The Catcher in the Rye,” by J.D. Salinger. The book, and the primary character Holden Caulfield, were claimed by Chapman to be the prime motivations for why he murdered one of the Beatles, and one of the greatest popular music figures of all time. The focus point of the book is the angst of Caulfield. He is disillusioned with the phoniness he finds in social institutions and adult life. The novel gained cult status, and it is has been associated with multiple assassinations. For example, John Hinckley Jr. was also a fan of the book. He attempted to assassinate President Ronald Reagan. Chapman is considered to have mental health issues which are significant, so it’s not as if a normal person can be driven to kill by reading this book.
