Crystal Bowersox Bobby McGee: American Idol and big plans

Last night’s American Idol seemed to be channeling karaoke at the local bar down the street. Miley Cyrus actually offered surprisingly good advice, and the theme of Billboard Top Hits promised a decent show. Crystal Bowersox singing Bobby McGee turned out to be one of the very few bright spots in last night’s karaoke-like show, though. Friends that usually love the show started going online just to research same day payday loans just to pay for their drinks.

Crystal Bowersox blows away the judges with Bobby McGee

The American Idol Top 11 were instructed to choose a Billboard Number 1 hit for this week’s show. Given such a large pool of songs, most performers chose to sing what you would hear any given night at the karaoke bar. The majority of the American Idol Top 11 did not do the Billboard Number 1 hits true justice, though. The one exception to this was Crystal Bowersox – she did what the producers probably intended with this theme. With a disarmingly relaxed attitude and powerful voice, Crystal Bowersox really seemed to channel Janis Joplin. Joplin’s version of “Me and Bobby McGee” hit the top of the charts after her death in 1970, even though it was the third recording of the song. On American Idol, the judges seemed to be under the spell of the song and Crystal Bowersox, offering almost nothing but good reviews. The only judge that had anything bad to say was Ellen, saying she has yet to “feel a connection” with Crystal Bowersox.

American Idol’s Top 11

As good as Crystal Bowersox’s Bobby McGee was, there were 10 other performances on American Idol last night. The judges seemed unusually harsh last night, with Randy channeling Simon to actually say that was terrible to Paige Miles. 16-year old Aaron Kelly revealed a crush on Miley Cyrus and sang “Don’t Want To Miss A Thing” and even though Simon repeated his “too old” criticism, he will have another week on the show. Big Mike’s “Power of Love” bordered on loungey and corny, but he is most definitely safe for next week. All lovers of 1980’s music got a treat when Casey sang “The Power of Love”.”Superstitious” rendered with Siobahn’s signature screaming also earned good marks from the judges. The rest of the performers? It’s pretty obvious they are all holding on just long enough to get on the American Idol tour next summer so they can get installment loans for bad credit.

American Idol Top 11 mentored by Miley Cyrus

Before Crystal Bowersox sang Bobby McGee, she had “official mentor” Miley Cyrus sign her guitar. Surprisingly for most, Miley Cyrus actually offered decent mentoring for the American Idol Top 11. Miley actually managed to keep this otherwise dull episode interesting at parts, with her inside tidbits about the music industry.

Next weeks’ big plans

It’s very clear that Crystal Bowersox could be safe on American Idol until next week, even to her. At the end of her judging last night, Crystal Bowersox claimed to have “Big plans for next week”. The possibilities run far and wide, given that next week’s theme on American Idol could be “Teen Idols”. FOX hasn’t said yet if “Teen Idols” will mean teen artists or artists teens love. Nobody but Crystal Bowersox knows for certain what her big plans are, so we will just have to tune into American Idol next week.
