Anita Hill is a Brandeis University professor living outside the media spotlight. But that changed when Virginia “Ginni” Thomas, right wing activist spouse of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, left Hill a curious voice mail message. During confirmation hearings for Thomas in 1001, Hill testified that he sexually harassed her and maintains this was true. The spouse of Thomas called Anita Hill on Oct. 9 and left a message asking the professor to apologize for telling the world about her husband’s sexual hang-ups almost two decades ago.
Clarence Thomas in a sexual harassment situation
Before the Judiciary Committee in 1991, Hill went to the Supreme Court confirmation hearings and accused Thomas of sexual harassment in the workplace. Thomas had been accused by Hill of pressuring her on dates, making lewd comments and talking about pornographic films to her. This she did, reports CNN, in hearings televised to all of America. In his own testimony, Thomas denied Hill’s story and called the hearings “a national disgrace” and a “high-tech lynching.”. He had been confirmed by the all-male committee on a 52-48 vote.
Voicemail message claims ‘Good morning Anita Hill’
ABC News reported what the Oct 9 message from Ginni Thomas said. It said:
“Good morning Hill, it’s Ginni Thomas. I just wanted to reach across the airwaves and also the years and ask you to consider something. I’d love you to consider an apology sometime and some full explanation of why you did what you did with my husband. So give it some thought. And certainly pray about this and hope that one day you will help us understand why you did what you did. O.K., have a good day.”
Anita Hill will not apologize as she claims the truth about Clarence Thomas had been said.
Thomas brings national politics into Supreme Court decision
In a statement Virginia Thomas confirmed leaving the message. She said she did it as a “peacemaking gesture.” It was not about timing at all. The NY Times accounts that Ms. Thomas has a long history of right wing activism. This year she founded Liberty Central, a political group focused on portraying policies of the Obama administration as “leftist tyranny.”. Since she is the spouse of a Supreme Court justice who is finances through anonymous right wing donors, many wonder if what she is doing with Liberty Central is even legal.
